MDA Telethon Ends Historic Run, Urgent Fight for Families Continues
MDA, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, announced on May 1 that the new realities of television viewing and philanthropic giving have made this the right time for the organization to move beyond its historic Labor Day telethon. It will discontinue production of a broadcast telethon effective this year.
MDA plans to invest more in digital and mobile channels for consumer engagement and activation. The organization will continue to share the inspirational stories of MDA families on Labor Day and throughout the year via digital channels as part of an emerging year-round plan to revitalize its brand, connect with donors more frequently, strengthen family support, and attract and recognize sponsors in new ways. See the full release to learn more about the MDA’s plans and the history of the telethon.

ER Visits Continue to Rise Since Implementation of Affordable Care Act
Three-quarters of emergency physicians report that emergency visits are going up, according to a new poll. This represents a significant increase from just one year ago when less than half reported increases. Rather than trying to keep people out of emergency departments, policymakers need to recognize the value of this model of medicine that people want and clearly need, according to the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). American Workers Are Changing the U.S. Retirement Landscape
On May 5, the nonprofit Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies (TCRS) released new research evaluating the retirement preparedness of American workers, Retirement Throughout the Ages: Expectations and Preparations of American Workers.
“Today’s workers recognize they need to save and self-fund a greater portion of their retirement income. In response, they are transforming the United States retirement system from a three-legged stool into a table by creating a fourth leg: working,” said Catherine Collinson, president of TCRS.
As the lead release from the 16th Annual Transamerica Retirement Survey, one of the largest and longest-running national surveys of its kind, this new research examines current expectations and preparations among American workers in their twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, and sixties and older.
