Yahoo Said to Start Approaching Bidders as Soon as Monday (Bloomberg Business)
Yahoo! Inc. will begin approaching potential corporate and private equity buyers as the company seeks bidders for its core business, according to people familiar with the process. Bloomberg Business reports that companies such as Verizon Communications Inc., Comcast Corp. and AT&T Inc. are among the interested parties, as well as buyout firms including Bain Capital Partners, KKR & Co. and TPG. Yahoo recently said it hired financial advisers and told independent board members to explore its strategic options, as it takes steps to transform itself and consider deals amid rising pressure from investors.
CNN Brings Its Digital ‘War Room’ to London (Digiday)
CNN is aggressively expanding its CNNMoney vertical internationally, starting in London where it’s building a 12-person digital “war room,” Digiday reports. The war room is a replica of those the news organization has built in Atlanta and Washington, DC. CNN’s war room leans on in-house technology to mine the web, to identify high-interest topics the publisher isn’t yet covering, Digiday reports.
Former BuzzFeed President Jon Steinberg Launches Cheddar, a CNBC for Millennials, With $3 Million in Funding (Business Insider)
Jon Steinberg, former president of BuzzFeed and CEO of Daily Mail US, is launching a startup called Cheddar. Cheddar is betting the future of digital content is video. Business Insider reports Cheddar will stream one to two hours of live content every day, primarily from the New York Stock Exchange trading floor. Live shows will focus on tech and consumer stocks such as Google, Facebook and Chipotle.
How Hyperlocal News Outlets are Taking Shape Across the U.S. (American Press Institute)
The American Press Institute reports recent research by Arizona State University assistant professor Monica Chadha shows hyperlocals come in many different forms. For the purposes of her 2013 survey, Chadha examined digitally-native news sources that were started to cover a specific local geographic area. Takeaways from her research include banner ads are a mainstay of hyperlocal revenue, and more than 40 percent of hyperlocals have 20+ staff and cover entire cities.
