Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021: An Ingenious Tool for Building Molecules

Building molecules is a difficult art.  Benjamin List and David MacMillan are awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021 for their development of a precise new tool for molecular construction: organocatalysis. This has had a great impact on pharmaceutical research and has made chemistry greener.  The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021 to Benjamin List, Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany; and David W.C. MacMillan, Princeton University, Princeton, N.J., USA,  “for the development of asymmetric organocatalysis.”

The stars of the restaurant world converged this evening (Oct. 5) for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards 2021, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, in Antwerp, Belgium.  This year’s event saw restaurants from 26 countries across five continents place on the list, culminating in the announcement of a new No.1, as René Redzepi took to the stage to collect the double honors for his restaurant, Noma in Copenhagen, Denmark, as the World’s Best Restaurant 2021 and the Best Restaurant in Europe 2021.

Johnson & Johnson Announces Submission of Emergency Use Authorization Amendment to the U.S. FDA to Support Booster of its Single-Shot COVID-19 Vaccine

Johnson & Johnson announced it has submitted data to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to support use of a booster shot of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine in individuals 18 years of age and older.  The submission includes recent results from the Phase 3 ENSEMBLE 2 study that found a booster of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine given 56 days after the primary dose provided 94 percent protection against symptomatic (moderate to severe/critical) COVID-19 in the U.S. (CI, 58%-100%) and 100 percent protection (CI, 33%-100%) against severe/critical COVID-19, at least 14 days post-booster vaccination.

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2021: Physics for Climate and Other Complex Phenomena

Three laureates share this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics for their studies of chaotic and apparently random phenomena.  Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann laid the foundation of our knowledge of the Earth’s climate and how humanity influences it.  Giorgio Parisi is rewarded for his revolutionary contributions to the theory of disordered materials and random processes.
