African-American Food Bloggers We Love

Welcome to Blog Profiles! Each week, PR Newswire media relations manager Christine Cube selects an industry or subject and a handful of sites that do a good job with promoting, contributing, and blogging about the space. Do you have a blog that deserves recognition? Tell Christine why on PR Newswire for Bloggers.

We’re honoring February’s Black History Month by taking a look at some great African-American blogs. (This is the second in a series. Last week, we looked at travel blogs.)

This week, we’re digging into food.

Divas Can Cook says “Yes, you can totally make this from scratch!”

The blog belongs to North Carolina native Monique.

“Traveling, blogging, eating, cooking, diy projects, laughing, playing, and hanging out with my family are my favs,” Monique says, on her blog. “I like being silly (why not, life is short!), singing random words, dancing and having fun in the kitchen. I’m sometimes a tad bit granola and ocd at time, just roll with me m’kay.”

I like Monique’s conversational and amusing voice.

Some great posts weren’t too hard to find on her site. Among them: Fluffy Homemade Buttermilk Pancakes (Grandma Barb’s), Slow Cooker Meatball Stroganoff, Cookies & Cream Blondies, and Roasted Honey Mustard BBQ Chicken Thighs.

Seriously? I’m starving now.

Of her cookies and cream blondies, Monique said: “I rrrrreally hate to start the new year off with this Cookies and Cream Blondies recipe y’all, really I do.  Please don’t cut me. I know this is diet season but seriously this  blondie recipe has basically been begging, torturing … THREATENING me to give it a try. So I did. Yesterday. And it was magical!  I have no regrets.”

Chef and Steward is the blog of a husband and wife team on an epicurean journey. Chef Lij and Kari Heron are based in Dubai.

Here’s a bit about the chef from the blog: “Lij is an award-winning head chef (Chef de Cuisine) with ‘7 Diamond’ hotel experience. He opened the world’s most famous luxury hotel brand – the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khiamah, United Arab Emirates in August 2013 . His responsibilities include the well-received Lexington Grill steakhouse, the legendary Peacock Alley and the Camelia Lounge.”

Kari is a food and culture photographer, columnist, and “head cook (not ‘chef’) and bottle washer in their home kitchen.”

The cooking dynamic on this blog is really interesting.

Some of the posts I enjoyed include Video: How to peel and dice an onion like a boss chef, How to keep your dinner date from breaking your budget, and Behind the scenes of Lexington Grill, Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah, the UAE’s Best Steakhouse.

The latter post features really beautiful photography of the restaurant and kitchen.

And let’s not forget about food: Here’s their Best Squid Ceviche.

My Life Runs On Food gets an A+ for the attractive banner across the top: Peeled citrus fruit sprinkled with beautiful pomegranate seeds. Delicious.

The blog is the “sweet, savory, buttery, green and healthy food blog” written and managed by Sanura Weathers.

“We’ve been conditioned to think about cooking as a luxury of time,” Weathers writes. “It’s a necessity to our physical and mental health, but good food can fit into a hectic schedule. Sitting down for a meal is sometimes the only time a household verbally communicates with each other.”

But Weathers admits, she’s no “food expert, nor have I been to cooking school.”

My passion drives my evolving knowledge about food,” she says, simply. “I love reading food-related articles and cookbooks; listening to personal stories; and watching television shows. Learning about international cuisines inspires delicious vegetable dishes.”

Her blog truly is a reflection of this. I found a bunch of great posts, including #SmoothieNumbers 25: Maca Blood Orange & Pineapple, The Year of Maple Syrup, and Parade’s Community Table: Maria Zihammou’s Butter-Rich ‘French Bistro’ Cookbook.

She’s Got Flavor is where blogger Utokia Langley shares her passion for food.

“I am a self-taught home cook who has been cooking since I was old enough to use the stovetop,” Langley says. “Cooking is my calling, my passion, and my 2nd love (right after family of course)!”

Let’s jump right into the food She’s Got Flavor writes about.

Langley had me at Thanksgiving Sweet & Buttery Cornbread. And Slow Cooker Italian Sausage & Cranberry Chili. And Sweet Potato Cookie Pies – Grain Free developed by A Soulful Twist.

One more? OK: Best Homemade Chicken Strips Ever. These, I have to try.

In addition to recipes, the blog also features grocery coupons, videos, restaurant flavor, and posts on mom beauty and fitness.
