1. The Future of Journalism, in 3 Sentences (The Fix)

The current direction of journalism is something we cover here on a routine basis. This week, the newly appointed chief digital officer of the White House shares his viewpoint with the world. And it feels fitting, as the position itself is the first of its kind.

(See what I did there … ?)

2. This is my Next Step: How The Verge Wants to Grow Beyond Tech Blogging (NiemanLab)

The folks at The Verge are looking to make technology more appealing to their audience. No longer just a group of highly talented tech bloggers and journalists, they are reinventing themselves with the times.

These days, tech no longer is just an industry, but a lifestyle. From wearables to smartphones and drones, it has become an everyday part of our lives. Now, The Verge intends to cover it less like a business and more like pop culture.

3. NCAA Tournament: Sportswriters Getting Pushed Out of the Good Seats (Poynter)

As the big dance resumes this week, there is more than just one battle happening court-side. Dana O’Neil, the current president of the US Basketball Writers Association, is fighting to get reporters out of the press box and back on the court. As is typically the case with the NCAA, areas once reserved for journalists now are designated for “key supporters.” Unfortunately, this puts a premium on the bottom line and not the fans.

4. World Editors Forum Welcomes First Female Editor-in-Chief at The Guardian (WAN-IFRA)

Katherine Viner is set to take over as The Guardian’s editor-in-chief later this year. Filling the role currently held by Alan Rusbridger, Viner becomes only the 12th editor in the paper’s history and the first female to occupy the role. With a history dating back to 1821, I would say that is quite the feat.

5. Media News and Moves for the Week of March 23 (PR Newswire’s Media Moves)

Media Moves keeps you up to date with who went where in the world of media. This week’s edition includes a shuffling of the finance desk at Reuters, additions and promotions at the Los Angeles Times, and a new senior political reporter with The Huffington Post.
