GOP Convention, Day 4: And That’s a Wrap

The PR Newswire Audience Relations team is covering the political conventions! Follow us as we take on Philadelphia next week.

The morning of the final day of the GOP Convention was a lot like the calm before the storm.

Two things received heavy buzz early Thursday: The speech by Senator Ted Cruz the night before, which many said trumped remarks by Republican Vice Presidential Nominee Mike Pence, and Presidential Nominee Donald Trump’s interview with the New York Times on NATO. The story and later-released interview transcript came up on a couple panel discussions on the fourth day of the convention.

By evening, everyone was covering the big speech.

Still, it was a busy Thursday in Cleveland.

PR Newswire audience relations managers Anna Jasinski and Christine Cube began Day 4 with an engaging and informative panel discussion on the Road to the White House, hosted by The Atlantic at Blue Point Grille in Cleveland.

The panel included John Brabender, chief creative officer with Brabender Cox; Sara Fagen, partner with DDC; Mike DuHaime, partner with Mercury; Mike Murphy, Republican political consultant; Ron Brownstein, senior editor with The Atlantic; and Major Garrett, chief White House correspondent with CBS News. (For coverage of scenes and panels from #RNCnCLE, follow @PRNpolicy. We’ll be doing the same in Philly.)

The duo also dropped into the POLITICO Hub for a couple quick discussions on foreign policy with Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR).

After the morning sessions, the team headed back to Media Row to re-canvas the area and answer any last minute questions from journalists. The room was buzzing all day long as reporters scrambled to complete any final coverage and interviews ahead of the main event.

Thankfully, the nice folks at Mitchell’s Ice Cream (a Cleveland staple) saved the day with free treats for all. About 520 scoops were consumed by journalists in just a little over an hour.

It was also an honor to see one of the nation’s top political reporters, Bob Schieffer, who sat down for a live interview with CBS Radio News.
