Lockheed Martin to Deliver World Record-Setting 60kW Laser to U.S. Army

Lockheed Martin has completed the design, development and demonstration of a 60 kW-class beam combined fiber laser for the U.S. Army. In testing earlier this month, the Lockheed Martin laser produced a single beam of 58 kW, representing a world record for a laser of this type. The Lockheed Martin team met all contractual deliverables for the laser system and is preparing to ship it to the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command in Huntsville, Ala. “We have shown that a powerful directed energy laser is now sufficiently light-weight, low volume and reliable enough to be deployed on tactical vehicles for defensive applications on land, at sea and in the air,” said Robert Afzal, Ph.D., senior fellow for Laser and Sensor Systems.

Forty finalists, including Indrani, were honored tonight at the annual Regeneron Science Talent Search Awards Gala for their research projects demonstrating exceptional scientific and mathematical ability, taking home more than $1.8 million in awards provided by Regeneron. Das won the top award of $250,000 for her study of a possible approach to treating the death of neurons due to brain injury or neurodegenerative disease.

Shriners Hospitals for Children Brings Critically Injured Guatemalan Children to U.S. for Treatment

Shriners Hospitals for Children has admitted seven children in critical condition with burn injuries suffered in the March 8 children’s shelter fire in Guatemala. The children have been transported to the Boston and Galveston Shriners Hospitals pediatric burn centers. Critically burned patients are typically placed in pediatric intensive care units due to the severity of their injuries. Multidisciplinary teams at each location will provide all aspects of burn care, which could include surgery, treatment, rehabilitation and psychological support.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Now Available
