10 of the Biggest Media Moves in August

As always, there were several big personnel announcements in the media industry this month.

Let’s recap some of the most significant moves.

1. U.S. News & World Report

Kim Castro has been named the new editor and chief content officer of U.S. News & World Report. She is the first female editor and chief content officer of U.S. News and will assume day-to-day oversight of all of U.S. News’ editorial content. Castro has been with the publication since 2008 and most recently served as the deputy chief of content and executive editor of consumer advice.

2. The Virginian-Pilot

The Virginian-Pilot and the Daily Press have named Kris Worrell editor in chief. She began her new role on August 26. Worrell was previously the executive editor and vice president of news at The Press of Atlantic City in New Jersey and held that position since 2014. She also previously served as executive editor and regional editor at the Observer-Dispatch in New York, managing editor of the Beaumont Enterprise in Texas, assistant managing editor of The Times Union in New York, and special projects editor at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

3. Money.com

Money.com has launched Dollar Scholar, a weekly newsletter covering financial issues faced by millennials. The newsletter is issued every Wednesday morning and is written by Money reporter Julia Glum. She consults with financial experts to cover personal finance, answer financial questions, and address the trials and tribulations concerning millennial spending habits. Dollar Scholar is the brand’s first long-form newsletter and first brand initiative following parent company Meredith Corporation’s recent decision to maintain and grow Money.com.

4. Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone has welcomed Patrick Reis, based in Washington, D.C., as politics editor. He comes from the Washington Post where he was an economic policy editor since 2017. Prior to that, Reis was the deputy national editor of Politico and oversaw covers of the 2016 presidential campaign. He also has worked at National Journal as assistant managing editor on politics and policy.

5. Inc. 

Matt Haber is the new San Francisco bureau chief of Inc. magazine and covers technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. He is a veteran journalist who has worked at Fast Company, Travel + Leisure, The New York Observer, and Village Voice. Since 1995, Haber has served as an editor/media consultant and his work has appeared in The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, The New Republic, GQ, and Slate, among others.

6. InStyle

InStyle’s fashion news director Eric Wilson relocated to China in August and will transition to an editor at large role. He plans on covering fashion from a different perspective but also plans to write travel pieces for other publications. Wilson is a well-known fashion critic and before joining Time Inc., now Meredith, in 2013, he spent nine years as a reporter and fashion critic on the Styles desk at The New York Times.

7. Nylon

Nylon, the avant-garde fashion outlet which transitioned to online-only in 2017 and was recently purchased by Bustle Digital Group, has announced several key staff moves:

• Editor in chief Gabrielle Korn has left the publication. She was at the helm of Nylon since 2014 and served as the top editor of Nylon en Español. Prior to that, Korn was the beauty editor at Refinery29.
• Bustle Digital editor in chief Emma Rosenblum has assumed the role of interim editor in chief for Nylon. She oversees all editorial operations, content development, and brand experiences for Bustle, Elite Daily, Romper, and the Zoe Report and has been on staff since July 2019. Prior to that, Rosenblum was an executive editor at ELLE.
• Current editor of Fashionista, Alyssa Vingan Klein, will join Nylon as editorial director in early September 2019. She has been the top editor at Fashionista since 2017 and joined the fashion blog in 2013 as senior editor.

8. Fashionista

Tyler McCall has been named editor in chief of Fashionista, effective September 2019. She succeeds Alyssa Vingan Klein, who will join Nylon as an editorial director. McCall is currently the deputy editor at Fashionista and has been on staff since 2016. Prior to that, she worked for Teen Vogue as the digital fashion editor.

9. WBEZ-AM Chicago Public Radio

Chicago Public Media has announced the departure of Goli Sheikholeslami, who has been atop WBEZ-AM Chicago Public Radio as a CEO for five years. She will assume a similar position at New York City’s public radio station in early October. Prior to arriving in Chicago in 2014, Sheikholeslami worked as a strategic advisor for the European Voice, an executive at Everyday Health Inc., and served as a digital executive at the Washington Post for almost eight years.

10. The Wall Street Journal

WSJ has announced a couple staff changes at its New York City and Houston offices:

• Josée Rose has been named the elections editor, working across the newsroom to coordinate all aspects of the paper’s 2020 election coverage. She begins in late August and will be based in New York. Rose is currently the global digital news editor for EMEA in the London bureau of The Journal. She joined the staff 17 years ago and has held an array of roles across print, wire, and digital.

• Elizabeth Findell has joined The Journal as a reporter covering Texas out of the Houston bureau. She comes from the Austin American-Statesman, where she spent three years as a reporter. Before that, Findell covered City Hall for The Dallas Morning News.
