Blog Profiles: Horror Blogs

Welcome to Blog Profiles! Each week, we select a topic and handful of blogs that do a great job contributing to the conversation. Since it’s spooky season, we’re dedicating this week’s post to horror blogs. Do you have a blog that deserves recognition? Tweet our writers at @BeyondBylines.

Horror Blogs We Love - mediablog.prnewswire.com

My challenge to myself this October was to watch one (or more) horror movie(s) every single day of the month. We’re only on Day 7, but I’ve kept it up.

The issue I’m having right now is that I keep choosing incredibly awful movies because I apparently have little to no skill at picking out good movies. So I thought I would check out some blogs that might help me improve my skills.

1. Bloody Disgusting

This one’s at the top of the list because it’s probably the most famous. Bloody Disgusting is the breaking source for a lot of horror news — whether it’s new movies, video games, or books — but it also posts a lot of thought-provoking editorials.

It’s a really great source for indie movies and publications you may want to find, so I always pay attention to the Twitter feed.

Posts I enjoyed: Defending Scott Derrickson’s Underrated ‘Hellraiser: Inferno’ on Its Anniversary; and Master Your Shield in New ‘MediEvil’ Trailer.

2. Horror Habit

This personal blog is run by horror fan Jolie Bergman. I was drawn to this blog because Bergman has no hesitation injecting her own voice into her movie reviews and she loves paranormal content (which is what I gravitate toward when I’m choosing movies).

She also doesn’t spoil any endings.

Bergman’s watching a couple movies a day for the 31 days of October, so if you want some horror recommendations, I think visiting her site is a must.

Posts I liked: The Thing (1982); and 50 Horror Movies You May Have Missed (vol. 5).

3. PopHorror

This site is a newer one, launched in 2016, and is similar to Bloody Disgusting as far as content is concerned. PopHorror is more focused on the breaking news angle of horror content and covers things like video games, movies, and books, but does have some editorials as well.

One particular aspect I like about the site is that it hosts a “Women In Horror” month in March that is focused on bringing attention to women working in the horror industry through interviews and reviews.

Posts I loved: Women in Horror Month 2019 Interview: Blair Bathory; and Sixty Years of ‘The Twilight Zone’: Retro Review.

4. Wickergirl

Wickergirl is a horror film producer and writer. Because she’s currently putting out new content such as music videos, she focuses more on the production of horror content, rather than the breaking news in the horror world.

She provides an interesting take on content typically found on horror websites because she’s filming her own content. She also has a recurring podcast.

Some of my favorites: Top Monologues in Horror/Sci-Fi/Thriller Movies; and Kismat da takht: My Bollywood Horror Music Video.
