Blog Profiles: Homeschool Blogs, Part 1
Welcome to Blog Profiles! Each week, we select a topic and handful of blogs that do a great job contributing to the conversation. Many parents and children are planning on more distance learning in the fall. So this week is all about homeschool blogs. Do you have a blog that deserves recognition? Tweet our writers at @BeyondBylines.
With many parents planning on more distance-learning with their children in the fall, I thought it could be useful to have a few good blogs on hand with helpful tips and resources.
Whether you’re considering making the full switch to homeschooling or just looking for advice on adjusting to this new learning situation (however temporary), these blogs can help.
They also offer supportive online communities for anyone trying to balance the roles of teacher and parent.
1. Hip Homeschool Moms
This blog really covers it all. Homeschool tips and advice are organized by grade level, subject, Q&As, and encouragement, among other topics.
The blog goes even further by including posts on budgeting, travel, recipes, and news. Blog owners Trish Corlew and Wendy Hilton also run the very active Facebook page for the blog, helping readers connect to fellow homeschooling parents and be part of a strong community.
I recommend reading What if My Child Refuses to Do School Work?; How to Make Math Fun and Tasty; and The Ultimate Guide to Working While Homeschooling.

2. Weird Unsocialized Homeschoolers
Blogger Kris Bales and her husband have homeschooled their three children, all of whom have now graduated. Bales’ goal for the blog is to “be real and to write about the good, the bad, and the ugly of homeschooling,” complete with her self-described “warped” sense of humor.
The blog also includes posts from a team of other homeschoolers sharing their unique tips and advice for other parents teaching their kids from home.
I especially like the sections on high school, which can be particularly tough years for homeschooling, and field trips.
7 Homeschooling Freedoms and How to Embrace Them; The Best Way To Navigate Boredom With Kids; and Yes, You CAN Homeschool High School are good reads.

3. I Can Teach My Child
I Can Teach My Child, written by Jenae, a former first-grade teacher and mother of three, is a great blog for anyone homeschooling young children.
It’s unique in that Jenae didn’t actually homeschool her children, but she created the blog as a way to “help equip parents to spend time teaching their little ones.” Because of that, I found it uniquely suited to the current situation many parents find themselves in. Posts give parents fun activities and help them devote time each day to investing in their child’s learning.
You can find activities and advice for teaching children as young as birth-12 months. Readers can filter content by age group, concept (alphabet, shapes, reading, etc.), holidays, and more.
Here are a few helpful posts: Hungry Hungry Hippo Pool Game; Garden Activities for Kids: A Weekly Plan; and How to Learn at Home During a Pandemic.

4. My Little Poppies
Another blog that seemed particularly relevant to the current situation, My Little Poppies was created by Cait, a mom, school psychologist, and unexpected homeschooler. She also co-hosts The Homeschool Sisters podcast with her sister, Kara.
The blog is full of resources for homeschoolers, gameschoolers (if you’re more interested in playing games with your kids to accomplish schooling “must do’s”), and parents of gifted children. Readers also can find a great list of read-aloud book recommendations in a variety of subjects, including history, poetry, and science.
