Welcome to Blog Profiles! Each week, we select a topic and a handful of blogs that do a great job contributing to the conversation. As new work-from-home lifestyles are leading to many people considering moves, this week we’re focusing on relocation blogs. Do you have a blog that deserves recognition? If you found yourself browsing real estate listings in faraway places in 2020, you’re not alone. The New York Times reported that Zillow saw visits to for-sale listings climb more than 50% from March to November.

Some people may be considering making the jump from Zillow surfing to a real-life relocation. Maybe your job will allow you to work from anywhere. Perhaps you want to get out of an expensive city. Or maybe, like me, you’ve been watching too much “House Hunters” and decide it’s time for life on the beach (it’s not going to happen, but I can dream, right?).

Whatever the reason, a move is always a big undertaking. If you’re considering it, check out these blogs for advice and resources.

HireAHelper is a site that provides moving quotes, connects movers with the best local moving services, and has a great blog to go along with it.

The blog covers moving tips, industry news and stats, moving company profiles and reviews, and more. The company promotes a Hybrid Moving model, a combination of DIY and full-service moving, so you’ll find great content for both options.

My dad keeps talking about moving to Phoenix when he retires, so I was intrigued by the post “2020 Study: Where Do Americans Move When They Retire?” Turns out Virginia was the most popular state for retirees to move to in 2020, and Arizona didn’t even make the top 10.

And I wish I’d had the post “How to Inspect Wiring (Without Doing Much Work) Before Buying a Home” years ago when my husband and I moved into our home, which burns through lightbulbs like no house I’ve ever seen. The post provides easy tips for noticing bad outlets or wiring, even for those of us with little electrical know-how.

Moving.com

Moving.com is a leading online resource for online real estate and moving services. The site has been around since 1999, and that breadth of experience really shows in the helpful tools and posts.

In addition to tools like a moving calculator and checklist, the site is updated regularly with blog posts covering a range of topics to help you get through a big move in one piece.

Although the pandemic has put a halt to many activities, sometimes a move can’t be postponed. The post “Moving During the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19): What to Know” answers some important questions people may have if they’re trying to move during this time.

During quarantine, I’ve been watching a lot of homebuying shows (“House Hunters International” is my personal favorite). And while I always tend to side with the person who wants the turnkey property, I know many people want the fixer-uppers. If you are thinking of taking on a bigger renovation project, check out the helpful tips in “What to Look for in a Fixer Upper.”

This Florida-based moving company was founded by Megan Morris, who had experience in staging homes and wanted a moving company that was not only quick but took extra care of customers’ valuable items.

The blog is updated regularly with tips and tricks for a smooth moving process. And if you’re looking to relocate to the Sunshine State in particular, there are several helpful neighborhood guides to help you choose the right spot.

I’ve definitely been in the middle of a long moving day when I realized that I was drained and hadn’t eaten. So the post “Preparing Meals for Moving Day” is a nice reminder for anyone who may get distracted and overlook meals on the big day.

I’d also recommend bookmarking “Avoid These 3 Moving Mistakes.” There’s a lot going on during a moving day, and it can be easy to miss something. These are a few helpful tips to make the day seamless.

Moving.Tips

The Moving.Tips blog is chock full of advice on every aspect of the moving process. While the site is run by moving industry experts Ethan Greenfield and Joshua DeVaal, site visitors are also encouraged to submit their tips for publication.

Posts are organized into categories like packing, cost-saving, moving day, and post-move – a category I find particularly helpful since it’s not something people may consider once the stress of the actual move is gone.

I think most of us can agree that packing for a move is the absolute worst. And it can be difficult to know where to start. “What to pack first when moving house?” offers some guidance.

The Moving.Tips blog also has one of the most specific, niche posts related to moving that I came across. “How to move guinea pigs cross country” has information on choosing the best pet carrier and best transportation methods for your pet.
