Kroger Announces 10 Food Trend Predictions for 2022

Kroger Co. today (Jan. 18) announced its 2022 Food Trends Report, which predicts emerging food trends, consumer behaviors and popular items for the year ahead. This fourth-annual report centers on the continued dominance of at-home meals, powered by convenience, affordability, social gatherings, and the desire for sustainable and nutrient-rich food items.

“Last year, even as many Americans returned to work and eased back into social gatherings, it became apparent that new habits were formed in 2020 and that they are here to stay – including cooking more at home. Customers are enjoying the convenience, affordability and just plain fun that comes from preparing meals at home,” said Stuart Aitken, Kroger’s senior vice president, chief merchant and marketing officer. “As at home meals remain a staple, Kroger is proud to provide customers with fresh food options that meet them where they are in the kitchen – whether that’s a fresh heat-and-eat meal on a busy school night or a four-course recreation from your favorite restaurant you’ve missed.”

In other food news this week, M&M’S announced a new look and feel for the brand as part of its commitment to inclusivity.

Blood Markers of Brain Cell Damage Higher Over Short Term in COVID-19 Patients than in Alzheimer’s Patients

Patients hospitalized for COVID-19 had higher levels over the short term of blood proteins known to rise with neurological damage than non-COVID-19 patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, a new study finds.

Importantly, the current report, published online Jan. 13 in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, was conducted over two months early in the pandemic (March-May 2020).  Any determination of whether patients with COVID-19 are at increased risk for future Alzheimer’s disease, or instead recover over time, must await the outcomes of long-term studies.

CEO Optimism Hits 10-Year High – Three-Quarters Expect a Stronger Global Economy in 2022: PwC Global CEO Survey

CEOs continued to face pressure generated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and market conditions such as rising inflation, supply chain disruptions and the “Great Resignation” in parts of the world. Despite the array of shifting headwinds, the CEOs that PwC surveyed are the most optimistic they have been in 10 years about the prospects for a stronger economy in the coming year. More than three-quarters of CEOs (77%) predict the global economy will improve, while only 15% expect worsening conditions.

CEO optimism for 2022 is a tick higher than the 76% optimism level from a year ago and fully 54 points higher than 2020, when more than half (53%) of CEOs predicted a declining economy. These are findings from PwC’s 25th Annual Global CEO Survey, which polled 4,446 CEOs in 89 countries and territories between October and November 2021.
