Hispanic Heritage Month Blogs We Love

Hispanic Heritage Month Blogs We Love, Part 2

National Hispanic Heritage Month began a week ago.

In its honor, we looked at some good examples of Hispanic blogs – all themed around Hispanic cuisine. In case you missed it, take a look at Hispanic Heritage Blogs, Part 1.

This week, we’re taking a different direction and looking at some great Hispanic bloggers. (We try to offer up the occasional zinger here on Beyond Bylines. Proudly, this is one of them.)

Smart Little Cookie (now My Dominican Kitchen)

My Dominican Kitchen is a bilingual food blog from Latina blogger Vanessa, who was born in the Dominican Republic and has proudly called New York home for many years.

Vanessa is a wife and mom of two young children and says, “As I grew older, I became passionate about creating quick and easy versions of the recipes I grew up eating to share with busy parents who want to cook foods filled with Latin flavors that don’t take a ton of time to prepare.”

Her blog is a light-hearted site full of recipes and kitchen tips for family life.

I also am looking forward to testing these recipes: Coconut Tres Leches Cupcakes; Mangu (Dominican Mashed Plantains); and Mexican Arroz con Pollo.

Ex Beantown Cuban

This blog is written by Cuban-American journalist and author Johnny Diaz.

Diaz currently writes for the New York Times. He has also worked as a features reporter with the Sun Sentinel and formerly served as a media reporter with The Boston Globe. He also has authored five books.

I read with fascination Diaz’s piece on Miami’s Motown, which covers a film called “Deep City: The Birth of the Miami Sound” and talks about the “Caribbean-flavored” soul music that once defined South Florida music.

I’d also recommend reading The Wanderer, A Poem.

Puerto Rico Sun

Puerto Rico Sun has been “empowering … informing … building community since 2002.”

The blog is managed by Clarisel Gonzalez, editor and publisher of Clarisel Media, an independent media and community outreach firm.

I like this blog because Gonzalez keeps her coverage personal, namely her photo coverage of events like the National Puerto Rican Day Parade ’14 in Manhattan or the Puerto Rican Day Parade in the Bronx.

Puerto Rico Sun also shares important news about the Puerto Rican community. A recent example links directly to a Pew Research Hispanic Trends Project piece — Puerto Rican Population Declines on Island, Grows on U.S. Mainland.

Viva Fashion

This blog is written by beauty and lifestyle expert Carmen Ordonez. Ordonez has been featured in The New York Times, NBC, CBS, Univision, Telemundo, and CNN.

According to the blog, Viva Fashion “features the latest in fashion, travel, beauty and lifestyle” and aims to “empower women through fashion and helping them be the best version of themselves.”

This is a beautifully shot site with comprehensive feature stories.

I especially liked VF Travels: Marco Island and My Beauty Must-Haves. And while we’re on the subject of fashion and style – I enjoy Ordonez’s Steal Her Look series. Brilliant.
