Office Fashion Blogs

Dressing for work can be difficult — especially in summer, when you need to balance professional with cool and comfortable.

Many places of work have a dress code. Some are pretty lax when it comes to enforcing policies. Others can be a bit strict (you may have seen Congress’s no-sleeveless dress code last week).

Sitting at a desk all day, surrounded by familiar faces, it’s easy to blur the lines between athleisure and business casual.

If you’re struggling to get a handle on what is and isn’t right for your office, these blogs make the search for work clothes fun.

1. 9 to 5 Chic

9 to 5 Chic is a blog by Anh (pronounced: on), out of San Francisco.

“This is my way of expressing personal style at work,” says Anh, on her site. “But it wouldn’t be a personal style diary unless I shared some fun weekend outfits when I’m off the clock too. If it were true to it’s name, this little blog would be 8-to-8 Chic. But that just doesn’t have as nice of a ring, does it?”

Anh’s Happy 4th post is a great example of how layers can help convert your favorite summer dress into an office-ready ensemble. Cargo shows you how to take your favorite cargo jacket from casual to corporate. I also love how she made this pinstripe blazer look summery and chic.

2. Memorandum

I’ve been following Mary Orton’s Memorandum on Instagram for a while now. Her blog is a “New York City-based fashion and lifestyle destination for the stylish, urban working girl,” says the site.

Orton is a well-known lifeline for women seeking sartorial advice. She also recently co-founded Trove, an addictive mobile fashion app where users can browse ready-to-shop outfits from the world’s top fashion bloggers.

The blog features an entire section on office style, from conservative to creative and casual. Her workwear guides are supremely helpful for choosing the right outfit for key events, like your next presentation or the company picnic.

3. He Spoke Style

Brian Sacawa, a professional musician and former elite-level bicycle racer, noticed a huge void in the online menswear world back in 2013.

Sacawa started HSS “as a way to blend men’s style inspiration with men’s style information, to provide practical style advice, and to offer approachable, honest and relatable content for regular guys interested in menswear,” says the blog.

His post Casually Tailored: Summer Office Attire Done Right helps readers find a business casual look that beats the heat. The Best Shoes To Wear With Your Summer Suit helps locate the shoes to match.

As a hat lover and collector, I also appreciated his post Is It Okay to Wear a Hat Indoors?

4. The Work Edit

Abra Belke is the creator of The Work Edit. In 2004, she moved to Washington, D.C., to pursue a career on Capitol Hill. During an uneventful August recess in 2008, Belke started the blog as a destination for women who don’t want to sacrifice their sense of style for professional success.

The site offers product reviews, styling tips, and professional guidance for fashionable women with serious jobs. Her motto on Twitter: “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.”

Three Ways: Knot-Wrap Navy Sheath demonstrates how to take a classic dress from business casual to business attire to cocktail attire. Belke’s Look for Less posts help readers achieve high fashion stylings at a lower budget. I also enjoy her Workday Reading series that covers everything from sandals to life advice.
