Blog Profiles: Female Photographer Blogs

Welcome to Blog Profiles! Each week, we select a topic and handful of blogs that do a great job contributing to the conversation. This week we’re shining a spotlight on female photographer blogs. Do you have a blog that deserves recognition? Tweet our writers at @BeyondBylines.

Female Photographer Blogs We Love - mediablog.prnewswire.com

I took an interest in photography three years ago when I purchased my first DSLR camera. Females are an underrepresented group of photographers and it was truly difficult for me to choose only four blogs to recognize this week.

I want to shine some light on female photographers who I greatly admire and who dominate a wide variety of photographic specialties all over the world.

1. Matika Wilbur

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, this week’s recognition begins with inspirational photographer and adventurer Matika Wilbur. She “helps develop a body of imagery and cultural representations of Native Peoples to counteract the relentlessly insipid, one-dimensional stereotypes circulating in mainstream media, historical textbooks and the culture industry.”

Follow Wilbur on her ambitious journey, Project 562, a personal commitment that began 10 years ago to “visit, engage and photograph all 562 plus Native American sovereign territories in the United States.”

Noteworthy posts: Every Person Living In The Northwest Should Know This History; Dreaming About a Modern World That Doesn’t Erase Its Indigenous Intelligence; and A Thanksgiving Message from Seven Amazing Native Americans.

2. Lisa Michele Burns

Lisa Michele Burns, a professional photographer from Australia, gives fellow photographers helpful travel photography tips and guides via her Wandering Lens blog. Sometimes she focuses on a specific geographical location, which I love because as a photographer, knowing the weather is half the battle.

Posts to feed your wanderlust: Santorini Sunset Photography Locations; How to Plan a Travel Photography Trip; and How to Become a Professional Travel Photographer.

3. Click Community (formerly Clickin Moms)

Click Community is “a global community of over 16,000 professional photographers, aspiring professionals, and women who simply want to take better photos in their daily lives.”

The blog’s photography tips are very detailed and informative. I especially like this diverse group of contributors because they use such a wide variety of camera brands.

Posts I liked: The best lens to buy for your DSLR camera; How to capture beautiful lifestyle photographs indoors; and 6 Things you can do right now to fuel your creativity.

4. Susan Stripling

Susan Stripling is a 2018 Canon Explorer of Light and “Grand Master” of WPPI, the organization’s highest honor. If you enjoy gazing at wedding photos, Susan Stripling should be your go-to blog for wedding and portrait photography. Since publishing this roundup, Susan decided to archive her blog, but you can check out her latest work on Instagram.

Take a gander at some of my favorite posts: Yale Club Wedding; A Note About This Summer; and St. Regis Wedding.

    VSCO (Android & iOS)
A hugely popular photo editing app amongst Instagram users, VSCO is more than just photo editing, it offers a community for photographers to connect and create. Simply searching the Hashtag #VSCO on Instagram will reveal the huge community of photographers and casual users that use VSCO every day, a testament to the app’s popularity.
VSCO houses all the tools you’d expect from a favourable photo editing app; saturation, highlights, temperature and vignette can all be adjusted alongside many other settings. VSCO also offers a built in camera with advanced controls, allowing you to capture the perfect shot, edit and save, all without leaving the app, an A for convenience. Filters are also a huge feature for VSCO, with the option to buy filter packs each with their own distinctive styles and tones, very popular amongst users of the app.
