Welcome to Blog Profiles! Each week, we select a topic and handful of blogs that do a great job contributing to the conversation. This week’s roundup is for the dog lovers. We’re focusing on dog training blogs. Do you have a blog that deserves recognition? Tweet our writers at @BeyondBylines.

Unfortunately, my dog Hudson is not known for his good manners. Luckily, he’s cute enough that he can pretty much get away with anything (see photo below for proof).

Hudson

However, I’d love to get him to stop barking when all of my food deliveries and online shopping packages get dropped at the door. My husband and I would love to take him on a socially-distanced camping trip and not worry about him bolting toward other campers or dogs, even if it’s just to make new friends.

And when I eventually return to an office(?), I’d love for him to not feel any separation anxiety after having me home with him for several months.

So I thought I’d take a look at some dog training blogs that can help.

1. That Mutt

That Mutt was started in 2008 by Lindsay Stordahl and now features a team of contributors dedicated to improving relationships between people and their dogs. There’s also a weekly newsletter full of helpful information.

Posts cover dog training and behavior, as well as exercise and diet. I was drawn to the blog because it addresses common dog training questions that I think every dog owner has asked at some point.

I found these posts really helpful: Are Dog Parks a Good Idea?; Is it Ok to Play Tug of War With Dogs?; and How to Keep Your Dog Off the Furniture.

2. Journey Dog Training

Kayla Fratt, CEO of Journey Dog Training, has been a trainer since 2012 and specializes in animal behavior. Fratt and her team of experienced trainers have created a well-rounded site with resources including videos, podcasts, eBooks, online courses, and more.

Dog-dog relationships, cats, potty training, and phobias are just a few of the topics covered in the blog posts. Check out the Instagram account to follow Fratt and her border collie Barley as he trains for Working Dogs of Conservation, a group that trains dogs in conservation detection to protect wildlife.

Bookmark these posts: Help! My Dog Chases Wheels – Cars, Bikes, Skateboards, and More!; Introducing Cats and Dogs: Creating a Peaceful Household; and How to Keep You and Your Dog Sane During The Coronavirus Pandemic.

3. The Online Dog Trainer

Doggy Dan is the creator of this online training program and blog. He explains his philosophy on the site: “My life plan is to help change the world of dog training and make it a better place for all dogs. To help people see that there is another way to change their dog’s behaviour that is gentle and kind.”

Dan also hosts a podcast in which he speaks with other dog experts – make sure to check it out. His methods revolve around helping your dog be more calm in general, which deeply appeals to me as Hudson could really use some help in this area.

I enjoyed reading 8-Week-Old Puppy Schedule: The Ultimate Guide to Training Your New Puppy; How to Get Kids Involved While Training Your Dog at Home; and 10 Things I Want Every Dog Lover to Know.

4. The Dogington Post

The Dogington Post is an online newspaper for dog lovers and I could really spend a ton of time browsing through its vast amount of content. According to the site, “DogingtonPost.com’s mission is to be the internet’s trusted authority on dogs through exceptional writing, cutting-edge reporting and ‘awww’-inspiring photography.”

In addition to the fun stuff like celebrity pets, dog astrology, and dog fashion, the section for training has a lot of helpful posts and resources. Check out the Ask the Trainer section for advice directly from experienced dog trainer Steve Reid.
